HYDERABAD: Dognapping cases are on the rise in the city, which often leave pet owners emotionally distraught, with at least 3-4 cases being reported to cops every month.
With the sale of pedigree dogs booming, especially since the Covid-19 induced lockdown, dog thefts have become a huge concern for pet owners in the city, police said, blaming illegal breeders for the thefts.

Police and animal activists say Labradors, Huskies and small breeds like Poodles, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Cocker Spaniels are mainly targeted as they are easier to handle.
In a recent case, a male German Shepard was stolen from a house in Santosh Nagar by a two-member gang that came on a two-wheeler. The pet owner, Shalika Vadugula, sought help on social media and from the police to trace her dog named Willy Wonka. Luckily, it was found.
It’s been two months since one person who came on a bike snatched my dog from my father’s hands and drove away. We are still looking for the dog and even filed a police complaint, but we are not able to trace our pet or who stole it,” said Ramya Kumari, a resident of Yousufguda.
Animal welfare activists in the city say that pets are stolen for a number of reasons, with financial gain and breeding being the main motives.
“Illegal breeders are specifically targeting homes in order to steal pets so that they can breed them and earn money. The breeders use stolen pedigree dogs and abandon them once they are past their breeding lifespan. Also, most of these breeding centres are not registered with the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the dogs are kept in cramped cages in dirty, deplorable conditions without any good food or veterinary care,” said Pradeep Nair of Animal Warriors Conservation Society.
Alwal sub-inspector M Parusuram said they get about two complaints every month in the city. “Breeds like Labradors, Huskies, St Bernards and other small breeds are stolen more when compared to common breeds like Pomeranians or an Indian Spitz because they get more money when they breed these dogs and sell their puppies. Breeds like Labradors are also easy targets due to their docile nature,” said Nair.
