Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson & Rupert Grint reunite in the first image from the HBO Max special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.
The first look at Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint from the upcoming Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Special on HBO Max has been revealed. Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint starred as Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger, and Ron Weasley, respectively, in the franchise that went on to become a global phenomenon. Based on the books by J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter series became the third-highest grossing franchise of all time, taking in more than $7.7 billion worldwide.
The Harry Potter films kicked off The Wizarding World franchise, which consists of books, films, video games, theme parks, plays and more, spreading the phenomenon throughout the world and keeping the Harry Potter legacy alive and well. A sequel of sorts, called Harry Potter and The Cursed Child was adapted as an award-winning play, while a prequel series titled Fantastic Beasts, is set to release the third film in the series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, in 2022. Last month, it was announced that the original cast would be reuniting to celebrate the first film’s 20th Anniversary in an HBO Max special set to release in 2022.
Now, HBO Max has released the first image from the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special ahead of the debut, which reunites Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson for the first time on screen in a decade. Cast members and filmmakers from all eight Harry Potter films will take part in the anniversary of the franchise’s first film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which will include making-of stories through all-new in-depth interviews with cast members, including Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, and Evanna Lynch, among others. Take a look at the image below:
Notably absent from the Harry Potter special is Rowling, who has come under fire for social media comments in recent years, leaving the reunion without its creator, unless her appearance is being kept under wraps. The author has written the screenplays for the Fantastic Beasts series thus far, with Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves stepping in for the latest effort to assist her. It was also recently announced that HBO Max was working on a Harry Potter series for the streamer, although no details have been revealed in terms of what that would be or who is involved.
Harry Potter has become as popular as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, or Marvel at this point, and HBO Max is smart to capitalize on that popularity. Owning the IP and having the ability to expand on it is another thing entirely, which should be a top priority for WB and HBO Max. The announcement of a new series coming to the streamer is a smart move, but hopefully it’s something that fans will want (more Harry Potter), rather than something they don’t (less Fantastic Beasts). Spinoffs and prequels can be great for any studio IP, but oftentimes those projects can veer too far away from what makes them special, creating something unrecognizable to the original property. Hopefully, whatever Harry Potter projects spring forth in the future will keep that in mind.
