pegasus: Pegasus tech sold only to govts, says Israeli envoy | India News

NEW DELHI: In the midst of the Supreme Court constituting a three-member expert committee to investigate the allegations into the use of Pegasus spy/surveillance software, the Israeli ambassador to India clarified that export licenses to the company is only granted for sale to governments, not private sector entities.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Naor Gilon, the new Israeli envoy responded to questions saying “NSO is a private Israeli company. Every export by NSO requires a government license.” Adding that he had been dealing with the issue, he said, “We grant export licenses only to governments. They cannot sell to non-governmental actors.”
Questioned whether the embassy would join the Supreme Court-ordered investigation, he said, “What’s happening in India is India’s internal matter.”
On Wednesday the Supreme Court, while framing the terms of reference for the expert panel said it would Framing the terms of reference for the panel, the court said it would “inquire, investigate and determine” whether the Pegasus suite of spyware was used for snooping in India and who were the targets.
The committee is also expected to find out whether the spyware was acquired by the Centre or states or any government agency and if citizens were spied on. “If any governmental agency has used the Pegasus suite of spyware on citizens, under what law, rule, guideline, protocol or lawful procedure was such deployment made? And if any domestic entity/person has used the spyware on the citizens of this country, then is such a use authorised?” it said.
When the controversy broke, the company, NSO, at the heart of the issue had clarified that their clients were only governments. The Pegasus spyware has been used to break into phones and digital existence of activists, opposition, judiciary and journalists in India.
