CHENNAI: The ruling DMK and its allies are set to sweep the rural local body polls held in nine reorganised districts in Tamil Nadu. They were also leading in bypolls to 789 vacant seats in 28 other districts.
By 2pm on Tuesday, the DMK party was leading in 74 district panchayat wards out of the total 140 in the nine districts while its ally Congress was leading in four seats. The principal opposition AIADMK and BJP were leading in one district panchayat ward each.
The DMK was also leading in more than 100 panchayat union wards out of a total 1,381 in the nine districts while its allies MDMK in two panchayat union wards and Congress and VCK were leading in one panchayat union ward each. The AIADMK was leading in 18 panchayat union wards, PMK in seven, AMMK in two and independent candidates in five.
If the present trend continues, the DMK and its allies will garner more than 75% of the district panchayat wards and panchayat union wards. The DMK alliance may end up winning more than 110 out of 140 district panchayat wards and more than 1,000 out of 1,381 panchayat union wards. The DMK alliance was also leading in the majority of the local bodies that went for bypolls.
